// NZSL Tool KitHow can one reach a primary and intermediate target group? Create a groovy and colourful series of NZSL learning resource for our client, that's what we did! The NZSL Tool Kit series got rave reviews from teachers. And some chocolates.

Lesson plans, activities and a series of DVDs were created in collaboration with Kelston Deaf Education Centre and Deaf Aotearoa as an introduction to NZSL, aka Part 1 and Part 2.

Released in consecutive years, we dug in and created this series with topics relative for the target audience, such as colours, feelings, family, weather, technology and games. An enjoyable package. Yeah!

// NZSL superimposed on screenSometimes a video will already have been made, and you are unable to make another NZSL specialised video.

A great solution would be to superimpose a signer on top of your video. We can prepare translations that match as well as the timing of your existing product, so that no further filming or editing is required from your side.

We recently worked with Civil Defence and Orion Media on a project aimed at helping New Zealanders to prepare for emergencies. The 16-minute mainstream resource was already produced when we were approached with regards to making this resource accessible to Deaf and hearing impaired people.

With our in-house video studio and translation team, we were able to offer a quick and inexpensive solution: superimpose a signer on top of that completed video. A separate track was then created on the DVD, which allowed viewers the option to view the DVD with NZSL access, with signer and subtitles and one with both options.

The end product resulted in a great resource and outcome for all, with the NZSL translation matching the video right down to micro-seconds.

// National Anthem in NZSLThe NZSL National Anthem project was devised in the light of the Rugby World Cup 2011, in order to place NZSL alongside Maori and English, as NZ’s three official languages, and showcase this to the world.

We developed this filming project from the original idea through to the effects, using an expanded and capable team. This well-edited video aimed to place NZSL in a national context, showing off the beauty of our natural environments. With NZSL being a visual language that uses movement, we wanted to encompass these elements in the production design. The camera is never static, and even the singing includes specific camera movements to accentuate the angles of the language. A technically complex task, with good results for our client.

The short version can be viewed here, with the extended version able to be purchased from Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand.

// NZSL ActOur brief was to create a NZSL translation of the NZSL Act, able to be accessed by Deaf New Zealanders online. This is the first ever translation of a NZ law, therefore we needed to careful develop conventions and formatting that made the end product accessible, while not endangering the integrity of the legal document. An interesting challenge.

The purpose of the New Zealand Sign Language Act is to promote and maintain the use of New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) by:

1) declaring NZSL to be an official language of New Zealand
2) providing for the use of NZSL in legal proceedings (such as courts)
3) empowering the making of regulations setting competency standards for the interpretation in legal proceedings of NZSL
4) stating principles to guide government departments in the promotion and use of NZSL
